Our body and mind form one unit in complete symbiosis. The body is not separated. It’s not a completely stranger entity able to dysfunction by its own action. Our thoughts, emotions and experiences are embedded in our body which becomes a reflection of our state of being. Understanding it becomes essential to understand ourselves.
The spiritual community, the positive schools of thinking and personal growth currents almost promote all the control of emotions.
« Don’t feel anger », « Be at peace forever with the sole power of thoughts » or « control your fears with positive affirmations » are all mantras that implicitly induce us to repress our real emotions that turned out to be unpopular and almost shameful.
Thus, a person on a spiritual path would not dare to admit to herself feeling anger regarding the slowness of her progress without risking jeopardizing the progress she already made and fearing to return to square one by the only thought of anger.
A therapist would not express his fears not to live up his clients’ expectations because a therapist is supposed to have overcome all his fears.
Therefore, feeling emotions and expressing them would run counter to the precepts of spiritual success. We are being taught to control emotions by choosing which ones to feel, which ones to banish. However, our body doesn’t work like this. It’s the perfect reflection of our state of being. We suffer internally, it suffers physically. We repress emotions that we judge too shameful to feel, it expresses them in symptoms.
And what a wonderful compass! What a precious tool! We spend lots of time denying our body, commenting it, starving it, controlling it, pushing it, neglecting it, criticizing it, etc. But we don’t see that it’s US. There is no separation. It imprints what we live, think and believe. And when our body starts going wrong, it gives us clues on how to recover itself. Just like for criminal investigations, it becomes a capital clue for the manifestation of the truth. The symptom invites us to understand the hidden message. What is underneath the emotions we denied and refused to express. What is so shameful to feel. But the body only expresses the inner truth.
Our belief systems and their implication
Our body is a very smart and complex system. Our thoughts and beliefs format it every day. Positive thinking currents often stop at the sole thoughts. Of course that what we think of the world impact our reality. If I believe that I’m not important and I think my life is pointless, what I’m going to perceive of this world will necessarily be a representation of this belief and repeated thoughts. For instance, people won’t barely talk to me, won’t care about me, I won’t get any satisfaction in doing my job, I will feel invisible to the others, etc. So if I strive to repeat myself every day in front of my mirror that I am important, it should change my reality, right?
Well, unfortunately, we see pretty quickly that it’s not enough. Positive thinking is not enough to change our reality. It implicitly makes us feel guilty of feeling our true emotions. Our reality will change once the source event that created this profound belief is put into light and released.
Energetically, according to universal laws of attraction, alike energy attracts matching energy, to respond to it. So if I carry the profound belief that I am not important, to continue our example, I will irrevocably attract all situations in which I won’t feel important. And trying to convince myself that I am important is not going to change my reality because the energy of this belief is still existing in my energetic system, in my body, in my subconscious, attracting situations to match it!
The real question
The real question is: what situation made me believe that I was not important to the world? What is that event that diverted me from reality: we are all important and we form a universal whole interconnected. So I’m carrying a false belief system that shapes my reality, or at least what I perceive from the reality and makes me suffer.
The first step to change our reality, and the most important spiritual initiation, is to listen to our body, to our being in its wholeness.
What does it say? What does it express?
Anger? Okay. I hear it. I am going to find a healthy way to express this anger that is starting to eat away at me inside and only wants to yell. I’m gonna get it out, when alone and away from prying eyes and behind closed doors. And I will allow myself to say out loud what I think and feel without any censorship. To release it and to listen to what anger has to say.
Fear? Okay. I hear it. I can feel my stomach being compressed, my heartbeat speeding up and a lump in my throat. I’m scared. Maybe I’ll start crying and shaking to let it out of my body by reliving it. And I’m gonna ask myself: what is terrifying me right now?
Shame? Okay. I hear it and I can feel this embarrassment and all I want is to disappear right away. My cheeks are blushing, my heart is going to explode. I’m ashamed. But ashamed of what? When did I feel this exact same feeling?
Etc.
I won’t go into details on how the psyche works because this can be more complex that it appears as some emotions are hiding the genuine emotions buried in the depth of our subconscious by a powerful mechanism of protection. This inner work must then be done with the help of a qualified person, external to our own mental and ego. Nevertheless, the process remains the same: finding out the source of our pain by using the body and the emotions as valuable assistance to our healing.
Once this “clue game” accomplished (who felt what, when, how and why), we can feel relieved of the weight our body has been carried. And our reality can change. We can then affirm that we are important because now we truly and deeply believe it! And the power of positive thoughts and affirmations makes now perfect sense: reinforcing our positive belief system, integrating and anchoring new data prior to the change of our reality.
And we can thank our emotions. And when we had been repressing them, we can thank the symptoms of our body! They served us well and guided us toward our inner truth! As painful and difficult as it might be.
What a wonderful tool for our growth! Hardly earned for sure, at the cost of our courage and determination, but what a reward! The possibility to change our reality and to find peace, true inner peace…
Thanks to our body! Thanks to our emotions!
Light and peace,
Claire
